The start of a new year is when we all set new goals for the coming 12 months. A few weeks ago I talked about my love for choosing a ‘Word of the Year‘ but alongside this I also set some life and business goals.
One of my goals for this year is to embed mindfulness in my life. If you’ve not come across the concept of mindfulness before, a very simple explaination is that it’s all about living in the present moment. That means not dwelling on things that have happened in the past that we can’t change and not worrying unnecessarily about what might or might not happen in the future. It’s all about living in the now and focusing on what’s happening right now. Paying attention to our thoughts and senses – what we see, hear, feel, taste and even smell – right now.
Mindfulness also allows us to become more aware of the stream of thoughts and feelings that we experience and to see how we can become entangled in that stream in ways that are not helpful. This lets us stand back from our thoughts and start to see their patterns. Gradually, we can train ourselves to notice when our thoughts are taking over and realise that thoughts are simply ‘mental events’ that do not have to control us.
I’ve created this week’s free printable inspirational quote print as a reminder to be more mindful, to focus on the present moment. When stress, anxiety or worry take over, it’s a great idea to do some deep breathing. Breathe in calmness, breathe out worry. As you breathe in say the words ‘I breathe in calmness’ and as you breathe out say the words ‘I breathe out worry’. focussing on our breathing and repeating the words is a good way to anchor our thoughts to the present moment and let go of our worries.
