This week’s free printable is this beautiful rose gold foil effect print which I created to encourage you to express your creativity.
Earlier this year I started reading ‘Big Magic’ by Elizabeth Gilbert. If you’re not familiar with the book it’s about creativity. She shares her own story about her creative journey and gives a unique perspective about creativity. She discusses the attitudes, approaches, and habits we need in order to live our most creative lives and encourages us to uncover the creativity that’s hidden inside each of us. I loved it and highly recommend that you give it a read.
One theory Elizabeth talks about is that ideas are floating around in the universe looking for an owner. Some you miss and some you catch. This was a big stretch even for me to get me head around. But then it kind of happened to me.
About a year ago I began having this strong feeling that I needed some creativity into my life. I wanted to make things! I didn’t have a clue what I was going to make though. I considered knitting, crochet, embroidery, painting, pottery… all sorts! But none of my ideas filled me with excitement. Then one Saturday morning in May 2016 I was in bed looking through Pinterest (as you do!) and came across a Pin about creating digital artwork. It sounds cliche but it was a lightbulb moment!
After reading the article my only thought was ‘Why didn’t I think of this earlier?!’ I’d worked in graphic design years ago and loved creating graphics for various blogs I’d had over the past few years. Why had it never occurred to me to go back to graphic design as a way to express my creativity? That idea which had been floating around in the universe had hit me and I caught it. Within a few days I’d started designing my prints and a few days later I opened my Etsy shop to share them with the world!
I believe we all have creativity within us. Think about your childhood. Did you like drawing, painting, making models, creating things with Play-doh? Children don’t just do all this solely for learning purposes. They’re expressing their creativity. It doesn’t just disappear as we grow up either. It’s always there. As we grow up someimes it stays near the surface but for others it gets burried deep inside. But it’s still there.
Anyway, what I’m trying to say is this. Get a little creativity in your life. If you already have some that’s brilliant. But if not, it can make a huge difference to your life. It can fill a gap that’s missing in your life. Doing something creative that you truly love is like meditation. You get so immersed in what you’re doing, you forget about time. It’s good for the soul!
All I ask is that you be on the lookout for those ideas flying around. You never know when one might hit you!
