I like to call this print ‘The Rules of Life’. Don’t you think if we all lived our lives by these words – smile, laugh, love, give, listen – the world would be a completely different place. Here’s why and how…
A smile costs nothing. But it can mean the world to someone who needs it right at that moment. When I’m saying thank you to someone, the cashier at the supermarket, the doctor’s receptionist, I always make a point of looking them in the eye and smiling at them. It really makes all the difference. Smiling releases those feel good endorphins that life our mood. If you’re feeling down, even forcing a smile has been proven to make us feel better. I like to make myself smile during a workout if I’m finding it tough!
Don’t they say laughter is the best medicine? Everyone knows that laughter makes you feel good and puts you in high spirits, but did you also know that laughter is chock full of mental, emotional and physical benefits. Laughter has been proven to actually make us live longer, be healthier and provides an edge when battling physical and mental illness. A good laugh can be compared to a mild workout, as it exercises the muscles, gets the blood flowing, decreases blood pressure and stress hormones, improves sleep patterns and boosts the immune system. So go ahead and find ways to bring more laughter into your life.
“Love is what we are born with. Fear is what we learn. The spiritual journey is the unlearning of fear and prejudice and the acceptance of love back into our hearts.” – Marianne Williamson
Everything in our life, including every thought that we think, every word that we speak, every action we take, is done either through love or fear. That’s it. Love or fear control everything in life. When we begin to understand this, we can then become more “conscious” of which we are expressing as we go about our day to day life. Wouldn’t it be amazing if everything we did was done out of love?
Giving without expecting anything in return is one of the cornerstones of creating more happiness in our lives. Don’t get me wrong, we’re not all unselfish all of the time. Human nature means we’ll think about what’s in it for us, at least occasionally. And I think that’s okay, as long as we make an effort whenever possible to do good for the sake of it. Now the interesting thing about giving without expecting anything in return is, we actually get back an abundance of whatever it is we gave. That’s what makes giving without expecting anything in return such a beautiful thing. What we get back in return is so genuine and pure, that no matter what we think of asking for in return, would not have the same effects on our lives, as the gift that we did not ask for.
I’m sure we’re all guilty of zoning out when someone is talking to us or thinking of what we’re going to say next, or what we’re going to have for dinner! But that’s not proper listening. When someone is obviously not listening to us when we speak it can be annoying, infuriating and downright disrespectful. It makes us feel unimportant or even unloved. Listening is one of the most important skills we can have. How well we listen has a major impact on the quality of our relationships with others. To really listen we must completely focus on what the person is saying – no distractions, give them loads of eye contact and acknowledge what they’re saying. And most importantly don’t interrupt. It’s also important to say that if someone wants to talk through a problem, we don’t have to have a solution for them. Just the act of being truly listened to can help to make a problem seem a little bit smaller.
